		<description><![CDATA[Oh how I&#039;ve waited for a post like this. Though my son is not on the spectrum, he is developmentally delayed and presented with many autistic like behaviors at 3 years of age. Living in Italy, many Roman doctors and clinicians told us we should stop speaking English and focus on Italian. I completely disagreed, and now I have a bilingual child who is constantly growing and learning and COMMUNICATING with both of his families. The research cited is so critical in understanding what goes on in the minds of special needs children. Keep it coming!]]></description>

We’re pleased that typically developing children with bilingual experience showed a pattern of improvement in their responses to two tasks presented in a graduated prompting framework (Patterson, Rodriguez &amp; Dale).   Our next step is to determine if responses to these tasks differentiate typically developing bilingual children from bilingual children with language disorders, but we’re not there yet.

I&#039;m not really sure about learning an L2 during the middle school years, but I think that the same principles could apply. It&#039;s often the case that learning a second language helps middle school children develop meta awareness of language generally. The other day I was driving the high school carpool kids who were studying for their Spanish semester final. One commented that they knew more about English grammar now that they were taking Spanish. So that could be helpful. The key for their success is to practice probably a lot more than what a typical kid might need, so there would need to be an awareness of that as well. But, really, we don&#039;t know for sure. My prediction is that it would likely be difficult, not impossible and that there could be some positive benefits.]]></description>
